A woman assistant professor in the urology department at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, endured months of harassment from a former patient who bombarded her with thousands of obscene messages and calls before appearing at her doorstep.

The accused, Mahesh Tiwari (41) from Basti district, had obtained the doctor’s number during treatment. According to her complaint, what began as polite exchanges soon escalated into 5,000 vulgar messages and over 1,000 calls in a single day.

Initial Warning Ignored

On May 12, the doctor reported the harassment to the 1090 Women’s Power Line, which warned Tiwari but did not take further action. While he remained silent briefly, the harassment resumed, forcing the doctor to restrict her movements on campus.

Stalking Incident and Arrest

On August 19, Tiwari was found waiting near the lift of the RMLIMS faculty apartments. When the doctor screamed for help, campus guards caught him and handed him over to the police.

He was arrested on August 21 under Section 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2008, and later sent to jail.

Doctor’s Account

Sharing her ordeal, the 32-year-old faculty member told Hindustan Times:

“My phone didn’t stay silent for even a minute. It was like living in a horror film. He started stalking me, lurking around my flat and appearing at the OPD. I was terrified and stopped staying alone at my residence.”

She further added,

“Sending thousands of messages does not show a stable mental condition. My husband and family feared for my safety. After the lift incident, I am mentally shaken and fear that my life is in danger.”

Police Statement

SHO S.K. Singh confirmed that despite an earlier warning, the accused resumed harassment.

“We had warned him after the first complaint. He remained silent for some days, then started harassing her again,” the officer said.
