In a shocking case of medical negligence, a half-meter piece of cloth was discovered inside a woman’s stomach two years after her cesarean surgery at a private hospital in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The incident came to light after the woman, who had been suffering from frequent stomach pains, underwent surgery at another hospital to address the ongoing issue.
Details of the Incident:
The woman, Anshul, was admitted to Bakson Hospital in Greater Noida on November 14, 2023, for what was initially planned to be a normal delivery. However, doctors later recommended a cesarean section. After the surgery, Anshul continued to experience severe stomach pain, which her family assumed was due to the stitches from the operation. Despite taking painkillers and seeking treatment from various doctors, the cause of her pain remained undiagnosed.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Anshul was taken to Kailash Hospital, where doctors advised another surgery. During this procedure, a half-meter piece of cloth was discovered inside her body. According to Anshul’s husband, Vikas Varma, doctors at Kailash Hospital warned that the piece of cloth had been inside her stomach for so long that it could have been fatal had it remained any longer.
Reaction from the Family and Authorities:
Vikas Varma expressed deep concern over the negligence at Bakson Hospital, urging authorities to take strict action against the doctors involved. He described the incident as a grave lapse in medical care and called for justice.
In response to the complaint, Gautam Buddha Nagar’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Narendra Kumar, confirmed that a formal investigation would be conducted. A committee will probe the incident and submit a report. If any medical negligence is found, the authorities will register a case against the negligent doctors.
Previous Incidents of Medical Negligence:
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of surgical errors in the region. Earlier in February 2023, a similar case was reported in Karnataka’s Puttur, where a doctor allegedly left a surgical mop inside a woman’s stomach during a cesarean section. In March 2023, another incident in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, involved a doctor operating on a patient without family consent and leaving a cloth inside him during surgery. Similarly, in 2021, a woman in Shahjahanpur reportedly died after doctors allegedly left a piece of cloth inside her stomach during a cesarean operation.
Growing Concerns and Calls for Accountability:
This case highlights the ongoing issue of medical negligence in India, where surgical errors, such as leaving foreign objects inside patients’ bodies, continue to cause harm. Families affected by such incidents have called for greater accountability and stronger oversight in medical procedures to ensure patient safety and prevent similar cases in the future. The investigation into this latest incident will likely serve as a critical step in addressing the issue and holding medical professionals accountable for their actions.
