Police take accused into custody from Wagamon resort; father arrested for allegedly helping him evade arrest

In a shocking incident from Kerala, a young doctor has been taken into police custody in connection with an alleged hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old college student in Angamaly, located in Ernakulam district. The accident, which occurred on February 28, sparked widespread outrage and protests in the region.

According to reports, the accused doctor, a native of Athirampuzha in Kottayam district, was traced and detained by police at a resort in Wagamon where he was reportedly hiding after the fatal accident. Authorities said he would be handed over to the Angamaly police for further legal procedures.

Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief K.S. Sudarshan confirmed that the accused was taken into custody after Wagamon police received specific information about his location. He added that the accused would be produced before the court after completing the formal arrest procedures.

Earlier on the same day, the police also arrested the doctor’s father, a businessman, for allegedly helping his son evade arrest. He was booked under Section 249 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for harbouring an offender.

The arrest came amid growing public pressure and protests by the victim’s classmates and several political organisations. Protesters alleged that authorities were initially lenient in the case due to the influential background of the accused.

Following the protests, police issued a lookout notice against the doctor on Thursday. Investigators later tracked him down in Wagamon after analysing call records and mobile tower location data.

According to police officials, the investigation revealed that the father had been accompanying the accused and allegedly helped him remain absconding. When questioned, the father reportedly failed to disclose his son’s whereabouts and claimed he did not know his location.

The victim, a second-year B.Com student at Angamaly Morning Star College, was the primary financial support for her family and worked part-time to fund her education. After she was declared brain dead on March 3, her family decided to donate her organs, a gesture that reportedly helped save four lives and was widely praised by the community.
