State government approves extension in public interest to ensure continuity in leadership and ongoing institutional development

The Himachal Pradesh government has granted a one-year extension in service to Dr Sita Thakur, the Principal of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The extension will be effective from March 1, 2026, and will continue until February 28, 2027.

According to a notification issued by the Department of Medical Education and Research, the Governor approved the extension in the public interest. The decision was taken to ensure continuity in leadership at the state’s premier medical institution.

Officials stated that the extension was granted considering the ongoing academic and developmental initiatives at IGMC. The government believes that experienced leadership will help maintain smooth functioning and institutional stability during this period.

The state government also noted that Dr Thakur’s services have been found satisfactory during her tenure as Principal. Her continued leadership is expected to support the progress of various reforms and infrastructure development works currently underway at the medical college.

IGMC Shimla is one of the most important healthcare and medical education institutions in Himachal Pradesh. The government has been focusing on strengthening the institute through improved facilities, technology upgrades, and academic expansion.

The notification further mentioned that the extension of service would be regulated according to the guidelines and instructions issued by the Finance Department from time to time.

As per the order, Dr Sita Thakur will retire from government service on February 28, 2027, after completing the extended tenure granted by the state government.

Earlier, the state government had also taken steps to upgrade medical infrastructure at IGMC. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art 3 Tesla MRI machine at the hospital, installed at a cost of around Rs 23 crore, replacing the nearly 20-year-old MRI system and enhancing diagnostic capabilities at the institute.
