New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced the launch of the ‘Sanjeevani Yojana,’ a landmark scheme aimed at providing free healthcare to elderly residents of Delhi.
The initiative, described by Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj as an improved alternative to the Centre’s health schemes, targets citizens aged 60 and above. “Today, Kejriwal Ji launched a significant scheme under which elders, above 60 years of age, will receive free treatment in private hospitals without any expense,” Bhardwaj stated.
Addressing Shortcomings in Central Schemes
Bhardwaj also criticised the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana, saying, “It covers people aged 70 and above and has a premium limit of only Rs. 5 lakh. The central government’s scheme has many flaws. The Delhi government has launched a better scheme that addresses these issues.”
Commitment to Elderly Welfare
In a public address, Kejriwal shed light on the challenges faced by senior citizens. “In old age, one thing troubles everyone. With age, numerous diseases emerge, and the biggest concern is accessing treatment. I have seen elderly individuals from good families suffer as their children fail to care for them. But you don’t need to worry; your son is still here for you,” he said.
Key Features of the Scheme
Under the Sanjeevani Yojana, residents aged 60 and above will receive free medical treatment in both government and private hospitals, without any financial restrictions. Kejriwal emphasised, “Whether treatment is sought in a government or private hospital, it will be entirely free. There will be no restrictions—everyone, rich or poor, will be treated without any upper limit.”
The scheme also includes:
- Door-to-door registration conducted by AAP workers.
- Issuance of health cards directly at residents’ homes.
- Comprehensive coverage for all treatments, regardless of cost.
Kejriwal assured the public that registration would begin within 2-3 days, eliminating the need for visits to government offices. “Aam Aadmi Party workers will come to your doorstep, complete the registration, and provide you with a card. Keep it safely,” he said.
Implementation Post-Elections
The Sanjeevani Yojana will be implemented after the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. “Once our government is formed after the elections, this son of yours will take full responsibility for ensuring your health in old age,” Kejriwal promised.
Political Context
The assembly elections in Delhi are expected to take place in early 2025. In the 2020 elections, AAP won a decisive victory, securing 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP managed eight.
By addressing healthcare challenges faced by the elderly, the Sanjeevani Yojana could become a pivotal factor in the upcoming elections, reinforcing AAP’s commitment to inclusive governance and welfare programs.
