Chennai: In an event held at the International Medical Convention in Chennai, Jitendra Singh, Union Minister was conferred with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his remarkable contributions to diabetology, diabetes care, and research. V. Mohan, Chairman of Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, read the citation, which highlighted Singh’s exceptional career as a teacher, researcher, and practitioner. The citation compared him to the esteemed B.C. Roy, noting his dual success in both medical and public spheres, including his three consecutive terms as a Member of Parliament and his role in the Union Council of Ministers.

Singh’s achievements also include his role as the Lifetime Patron of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), the country’s largest academic association for diabetologists. His extensive contributions include receiving the “Gold Medal for Oration” from JIPMER Puducherry, the “Jamna Devi Gian Devi Award” for journalism, and authoring eight books and three monographs on diabetes. His book “Diabetes Made Easy” was featured in the Best-Seller section of the World Book Fair in New Delhi. Singh’s pioneering work on “Stress Diabetes in Kashmiri Migrants” received acclaim from the World Health Organization (WHO). He was instrumental in finalising the “Guidelines for Management of Diabetes in Pregnancy,” which have been approved by the WHO.

The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation from the audience, which included prominent figures from various fields when it was announced that Singh had received his academic training at Chennai’s prestigious Stanley Medical College. In his acceptance speech, Singh expressed deep humility and gratitude, attributing his success to the guidance of eminent medical professionals and his commitment to meeting the high expectations of his colleagues and the award’s honour.
