Cable Snap Triggers Panic as Lift Carrying Double Capacity Falls from First Floor
A tragic accident unfolded at Jhansi Medical College on Wednesday evening when an overloaded elevator plunged from the first floor after its cable allegedly snapped, leaving several people injured and triggering panic inside the hospital premises.
Overcrowding Suspected as Key Cause
According to hospital authorities, nearly 16 people—including women and children—boarded the lift despite its maximum capacity being limited to 8 الأشخاص. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Sachin Mahaur confirmed that the lift operator had attempted to stop the crowd from entering, but the elevator had already started moving before the situation could be controlled.
Sudden Fall After Reaching First Floor
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the elevator had just reached the first floor when its pulley cable snapped, causing it to fall abruptly. A loud crashing sound alerted security personnel, who immediately rushed to the spot and forced open the elevator doors to rescue those trapped inside.
Injuries Reported, One Person Suffers Fracture
Following the rescue operation, a woman was found unconscious, while a man sustained a broken arm. Several others suffered minor to moderate injuries. All the injured were promptly shifted to the emergency ward, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Authorities Promise Safety Upgrades
Hospital officials have sent the damaged lift for repairs and stated that additional safety measures—including installation of alarm systems—will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
Similar Incident Raises Safety Concerns
This incident comes shortly after another tragic elevator accident at Dr Vasantrao Pawar Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, where a 50-year-old contractual employee lost her life after her head got trapped in a lift, raising serious concerns over maintenance and safety protocols in medical institutions.
Growing Concern Over Hospital Infrastructure Safety
Repeated incidents of elevator failures in hospitals highlight the urgent need for strict adherence to maintenance protocols, load regulations, and safety audits to ensure patient and visitor safety across healthcare facilities.
