Patient Couple Alleges Theft During Surgery at Private Hospital in Hennur
In a shocking incident from Bengaluru, gold and silver jewellery worth nearly Rs 9.7 lakh was allegedly stolen from a hospital ward while a woman was undergoing surgery at a private hospital on the Hennur-Bagalur Main Road. Police have arrested a recently recruited hospital employee in connection with the case.
According to police officials, the incident came to light after a 41-year-old resident of Yelahanka lodged a complaint with the Hennur police station. Acting swiftly on the complaint, investigators traced the alleged theft to a female hospital employee, who has since been taken into custody. Efforts are currently underway to recover the stolen valuables.
Jewellery Kept in Ward Cupboard Before Surgery
As per the complaint, the couple had visited the private hospital on May 1, where the woman was scheduled to undergo surgery the following day.
On the morning of May 2, nursing staff reportedly instructed the patient to remove all jewellery before being shifted to the operation theatre. Following the instructions, she placed her valuables inside a handbag and kept it in the ward cupboard.
The missing items reportedly included:
- A 65-gram gold Mangalsutra chain
- A pair of 9-gram gold earrings
- 10-gram silver anklets
After the surgery, at around 2:45 PM, the woman checked the cupboard only to discover that the jewellery was missing.
Suspicion Fell on Hospital Staff
With no signs of forced entry into the ward, suspicion reportedly turned towards individuals who had access to the room, including hospital staff members.
The victim immediately informed the hospital management and later approached the police. During the investigation, police identified a recently hired female employee as the prime suspect.
A senior police officer confirmed that a case has been registered and the accused employee has been arrested. However, officials stated that her identity cannot be disclosed at this stage due to the ongoing investigation.
Police Continue Recovery Efforts
Police are continuing their investigation and are trying to recover the stolen jewellery. The incident has raised concerns over patient safety and security of valuables inside hospital premises.
The case also highlights the importance of hospitals implementing stricter security measures and secure storage systems for patients’ belongings during surgeries and medical procedures.
