Student Dies After Sudden Health Deterioration

Bhilai: An 18-year-old first-year B.Tech student at IIT Bhilai died on Tuesday, triggering massive anger among students and prompting a police probe into alleged medical negligence at the institute’s health centre. The student, originally from Madhya Pradesh, developed a fever on November 10, which reportedly worsened the following morning.

Family Accuses Institute, Doctors of Negligence

The student was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. His family has accused the institute administration and attending doctors of failing to provide timely care. They allege that delays at the campus health centre may have cost the student his life.

Police Confirm Epileptic Attack; FIR Registered

Durg SP Vijay Agrawal confirmed that the student suffered an epileptic attack around 10 am on Tuesday before being taken to Sparsh Hospital. An FIR has been registered, and a post-mortem has been conducted. Additional SP Sukhnandan Rathore said a detailed investigation is underway.

Students Protest Late Into Night

The incident sparked student protests on campus from Tuesday night, continuing until 3 am. An attempted candlelight march on Wednesday evening was stopped by the administration at the main gate. Students alleged that the absence of timely medical support — including no doctor on duty and no ambulance — led to the tragedy.

IIT Bhilai Expresses Grief, Announces Corrective Measures

In a statement cited by NDTV, IIT Bhilai expressed “profound grief” over the student’s death and extended condolences to his family. The institute said it has initiated immediate steps, including suspending the medical officer and ensuring round-the-clock availability of medical personnel and ambulance services.

Government Doctor Approved for Campus

The institute’s request for a government doctor has been approved by the Durg Collector. Additionally, the police have been asked to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Fact-Finding Committee Formed

A fact-finding committee with representatives from AIIMS, the local government medical college, and student bodies has been formed to review medical arrangements on campus. The committee is expected to submit its report within 15 days.

Concerns Over Health Infrastructure Resurface

The incident has reignited concerns over medical infrastructure at premier institutions. Students say the IIT Bhilai health centre has been understaffed for months, raising questions about campus safety and emergency preparedness.
