Shimla: The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government has announced a massive ₹3,000 crore investment to procure state-of-the-art medical equipment for all government medical colleges in the state, aiming to significantly upgrade healthcare infrastructure.

Advanced Equipment on AIIMS Lines

Speaking during the Budget Session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, the Chief Minister said that advanced robotic surgery machines and modern medical devices will be procured on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He emphasized that the procurement process is being carried out through a transparent tendering system to ensure quality and accountability.

“All machines are being purchased in a transparent manner to ensure quality healthcare services,” Sukhu stated.

New Cancer Hospital in Hamirpur

The government is also planning to establish a state-of-the-art cancer hospital in Hamirpur district to strengthen specialized healthcare services in the region. This move is expected to reduce the burden on existing facilities and improve cancer treatment access within the state.

Expansion of PG Courses in Medical Colleges

Highlighting improvements in medical education, Sukhu said postgraduate (PG) courses are being expanded across medical colleges. PG classes have already commenced at Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, which is likely to help address faculty shortages and improve academic standards.

Over 100 Faculty Posts to Be Filled

During discussions on staffing at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital, the Chief Minister announced that more than 100 Assistant Professor posts will soon be filled.

He also revealed that the current walk-in interview system will be replaced with a merit-based selection process incorporating fixed percentage criteria to ensure fairness and transparency.

“There have been concerns that walk-in interviews sometimes lead to appointments based on personal connections. The new system will ensure transparency,” he added.

Focus on Infrastructure and Accountability

Responding to a query by Kewal Singh Pathania, Sukhu shared details about funds allocated over the past two years for machinery procurement at Tanda Medical College. He assured that funds have been properly utilized and that steps are being taken to improve infrastructure, including lift repair and maintenance.

The Chief Minister also noted an improvement in pass percentages in medical colleges and stressed that expanding PG courses is essential for the efficient functioning of these institutions.
