Breakthrough Invention
Shimla: Dr Bal Chander, a pathologist at Dr Rajender Prasad Medical College, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, has been granted a US patent for developing a ‘Blood Analysis System’ (BAS)—a device designed to enable real-time monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients.
The device aims to continuously measure dozens of blood molecules and ions in critically ill patients, displaying results in real time without requiring repeated blood draws. It can also correct blood levels in a controlled manner, providing a tailored treatment for each patient.
Inspiration and Development
Dr Chander revealed that the untimely deaths of his teacher and a school friend motivated him to develop the project. He completed the device in one year, without external funding, sponsorship, or collaboration.
“The invention began as a method to monitor hundreds of blood molecules and ions, but it evolved into a system capable of both analysis and correction,” Chander explained.
Patent Recognition
The United States Patent and Trademark Office approved the patent, with Acting Director Coke Morgan Stewart confirming compliance with legal requirements. Additionally, the European Patent Office has recognized the invention’s originality and functionality.
How the Device Works
- The BAS allows continuous measurement of blood molecules such as glucose, lactate, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, and ions like sodium and potassium.
- Unlike conventional tests that require repeated blood draws and lab analysis, BAS provides real-time data, reducing the risk for critically ill patients.
- It can also selectively correct the levels of multiple blood components simultaneously, without drugs, unlike dialysis, offering a more precise control over patient treatment.
Dr Chander elaborated, “Current lab tests provide snapshots of constantly changing blood profiles. BAS allows continuous monitoring, giving a complete picture essential for critically ill patients.”
Background of the Inventor
A native of Shimla and alumnus of Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra, Dr Chander completed his MBBS and MD (Pathology) from AIIMS, New Delhi.
