CM Announces New Cancer, Trauma and Super-Speciality Centres
Haveri: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced plans to establish a cancer centre, a trauma centre and a super-speciality hospital in Haveri district, marking a major push to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Inauguration of Medical College and New Projects
The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences and laying foundation stones for various developmental works undertaken by multiple departments, including Medical Education and Health and Family Welfare. Stressing decentralised healthcare, Siddaramaiah said every district must be equipped with a medical college hospital, super-speciality hospital, cancer hospital and trauma centre.
Focus on Affordable Public Healthcare
Highlighting that a majority of the poor depend on government hospitals due to the high cost of private healthcare, Siddaramaiah said accessible and quality public health services are essential. He recalled that the Haveri medical college was conceptualised during his earlier tenure and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding medical facilities across remaining districts in a phased manner.
Defence of Guarantee Schemes and State Finances
Responding to criticism over welfare guarantee schemes, the Chief Minister said all schemes were implemented within the first year of the government. Despite spending over Rs 1.12 lakh crore in two-and-a-half years, he asserted that the state’s finances remain stable, with around Rs 52,000 crore being spent annually on welfare initiatives benefiting people across communities.
Development, Irrigation and Social Harmony
Siddaramaiah also highlighted major development works in Haveri, including school buildings, libraries and hospital expansion from 250 to 500 beds. On irrigation, he stressed the need to implement the Mahadayi project and complete Phase-3 of the Upper Krishna Project. Emphasising social harmony and scientific temper, he said the government aims to develop Haveri into a model district while promoting inclusive and secular growth.
