Assam’s Largest Government Hospital to Offer Faster Radiology Services After Quality Certification
Guwahati: In a major boost to healthcare quality in Assam, Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the state’s largest government healthcare institution, has received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH). With this achievement, all departments of the hospital, including radiology, now meet nationally recognized quality standards for the first time.
The accreditation, awarded by the Quality Council of India, is valid until May 29, 2026. It follows a comprehensive two-day assessment conducted on February 15 and 16, while the hospital received the official accreditation certificate on June 24.
The NABH certification is expected to significantly improve patient care, particularly in radiology, by streamlining diagnostic services, reducing waiting times, and ensuring faster delivery of reports.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH, said the accreditation marks a significant milestone for the institution.
“It is really good news for us. GMCH was already NABL-certified for pathology and microbiology, but radiology was not accredited,” he said.
According to Dr. Baishya, the accreditation drive was initiated following a directive from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who instructed all government medical colleges in the state to obtain both NABH and NABL certifications to standardize healthcare services.
“Accordingly, we applied, and after the assessment in February, all departments of the medical college met the required standards and received accreditation,” he added.
Highlighting the benefits for patients, Dr. Baishya said the upgraded systems would drastically reduce delays in diagnostic services.
“Now there will be minimal waiting time for radiological procedures. If a patient undergoes an MRI today, we will be able to provide the report the very next day,” he said.
The accreditation process was led by Dr. Dipu Bhuiyan, whose team carried out extensive groundwork across departments to ensure compliance with NABH standards before the assessment.
Welcoming the achievement, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the certification as a key step toward ensuring uniform healthcare quality across government hospitals in Assam.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated that GMCH, Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH), Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH), and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) have successfully secured NABH accreditation as part of the state’s healthcare quality improvement initiative.
The accreditation is expected to strengthen patient confidence, enhance clinical efficiency, and further improve the quality of healthcare services provided by GMCH.
