A minor fire incident triggered panic on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, leading to the swift evacuation of around 75 patients. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported.
Short Circuit in Operation Theatre AC Suspected as Cause
According to initial reports, the fire is believed to have originated from a short circuit in the air-conditioning system of an operation theatre at Anandalok Hospital. The flames quickly spread outside the OT area, causing concern among hospital staff and nearby residents.
Quick Response Prevents Major Tragedy
As soon as the fire broke out, pedestrians noticed thick black smoke and alerted the fire services. Within minutes, three fire engines reached the spot and began firefighting operations.
Hospital staff, along with local residents, played a crucial role in evacuating patients and safely removing oxygen cylinders from the building, preventing a potentially dangerous situation.
All Patients Shifted, No One Trapped
Officials confirmed that all patients, especially those admitted on the second and third floors, were safely rescued and shifted to another building within the hospital premises.
“We have rescued all patients, and everyone is safe,” a hospital employee stated.
Fire Brought Under Control, Cooling Operations Continue
The fire was largely brought under control by around 11 a.m., although firefighters continued cooling operations to completely extinguish any remaining flames and prevent reignition.
Investigation Underway, Damage Yet to Be Assessed
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. As of now, hospital management has not issued an official statement.
The extent of the damage to infrastructure and equipment is still being assessed.
