Accused Posed as Medical Professional
Siliguri police have arrested a man who was impersonating a doctor at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). The accused, a resident of Vivekananda Pally in Shalugara under Bhaktinagar Police Station, had allegedly been duping patients and their families for a long time by posing as a medical professional.
Collected Money from Patients
According to police sources, the man, identified as Roy, collected money from patients by promising treatment and diagnostic services. On Saturday, he reportedly took money from a patient’s family for arranging an X-ray but failed to deliver. This aroused suspicion, leading the family to file a complaint at the NBMCH police outpost.
Arrest and Court Production
Acting on the complaint, police arrested the fake doctor and transferred him to Matigara Police Station. He was later produced before the Siliguri court on Sunday. Authorities have launched a detailed probe to determine the extent of the fraud and to check if he was linked to a larger broker network operating within the hospital.
Concerns Over Hospital Security
The incident has raised serious questions about patient safety and security at NBMCH, one of the largest government-run healthcare facilities in North Bengal.
Committees Formed for Healthcare Complaints
In light of recurring issues, the West Bengal Medical Council has set up two penal ethics committees to handle healthcare-related complaints in North Bengal. These committees, each comprising five experts, will function at NBMCH on the outskirts of Siliguri and at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
