Accused allegedly worked as clinic in-charge in Kharupetia for seven months using fake medical documents, triggering outrage over healthcare oversight

A major case of alleged medical fraud has surfaced in Assam’s Darrang district, where a man posing as a qualified doctor was reportedly found practising medicine with a forged MBBS certificate in Mangaldai.

According to reports, the accused had been serving as the in-charge of a private clinic in Kharupetia for nearly seven months before health authorities uncovered the alleged scam during a verification process initiated after complaints from local residents.

Fake MBBS Certificate Raises Serious Questions

Investigations revealed that the accused had submitted a suspicious and allegedly forged medical certificate claiming that he had completed an MBBS qualification from “Delhi Degree College.” The document, dated December 2, 2008, also mentioned a diploma allegedly issued by the “International Association of Independent Publishers (America)” and referred to a questionable three-year medical course.

Authorities reportedly found multiple irregularities in the certificate, including contradictory addresses. One address mentioned was “77 Vipin Garden, New Delhi 110059,” while another previous address pointed to “Gobind Pura, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang Sayaal Road, Pakistan.”

Officials described the certificate as a blatant forgery that should have raised immediate red flags during the appointment process.

Health Department Orders Immediate Action

Despite the suspicious credentials, the accused allegedly secured a key medical role at a clinic that had received provisional registration under registration number AS13/DRA/034 on November 11, 2025.

The clinic is reportedly owned by another individual, while the accused was entrusted with medical responsibilities and patient care.

Following verification by the health department, the Joint Director of District Health Services ordered the immediate suspension of the accused from practising medicine.

In a bizarre revelation during questioning, the accused allegedly claimed that MBBS stood for “Medical Basics of Biological System,” further exposing his lack of genuine medical education.

Residents Demand Crackdown on Fake Practitioners

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the region, with residents alleging that several unauthorised medical practitioners continue operating clinics and pharmacies in areas such as Kharupetia, Dalgaon, and Besimari using forged certificates.

Locals have demanded stricter verification mechanisms, regular inspections, and stronger action against fake doctors operating in private healthcare facilities.

The case has once again highlighted serious concerns over regulatory lapses and inadequate credential verification in the healthcare sector, especially in semi-urban and rural regions.
