Odisha Medical Fraternity Pays Tribute to a Pioneer in Pathology

The medical fraternity of Odisha is mourning the loss of distinguished pathologist Dr. Maya Nanda, who passed away at the age of 85 after battling a respiratory illness for the past month. Her demise marks the end of an era in the field of diagnostic medicine in the state.

Born in 1940 in Puri, Dr. Nanda was the daughter of noted freedom fighter and respected physician Basanta Kumar Nanda. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in public service and medicine, she carried forward a proud legacy through her own remarkable career.

Dr. Nanda completed her MBBS from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. She later achieved the rare academic distinction of earning dual MD degrees in Biochemistry and Pathology, demonstrating her exceptional dedication to medical science.

Throughout her illustrious career, she served as Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology at several leading government medical institutions in Odisha. Her academic leadership helped shape generations of medical students and postgraduate trainees.

She also headed the Central Laboratory at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, VIMSAR, Burla, and SCB Medical College. Under her guidance, these institutions witnessed significant improvements in laboratory diagnostics and quality standards.

In addition, Dr. Nanda played a crucial role in establishing and strengthening the Department of Pathology at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar. As Professor and Head, she laid a strong foundation for advanced pathology services in the private healthcare sector.

Colleagues remember her as a disciplined academician, a meticulous diagnostician, and a compassionate mentor. Her contributions greatly enhanced diagnostic infrastructure and medical education across Odisha.

Dr. Maya Nanda’s legacy lives on through the countless students she trained and the institutions she helped build. Her passing is an irreparable loss to Odisha’s medical community, which remembers her with deep respect and gratitude.
