Veteran Dental Academic to Lead India’s Apex Dental Regulatory Body
Dr Sanjay Tiwari, Principal of Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences (PGIDS), Rohtak, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Dental Commission (NDC). His appointment marks a significant development in India’s dental education and regulatory landscape.
The National Dental Commission (NDC) was constituted under the National Dental Commission Act, 2023, replacing the erstwhile Dental Council of India (DCI). The NDC serves as the apex regulatory authority responsible for maintaining standards in dental education and overseeing professional conduct and practice of dentists across the country.
Dr Tiwari’s appointment was made on the recommendation of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, in accordance with the provisions of the National Dental Commission Act, 2023. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued the official appointment letter on February 4, and he is expected to assume charge shortly.
With over 34 years of experience in dentistry, Dr Tiwari brings extensive academic and clinical expertise to the role. He holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Operative Dentistry from King George Medical University (KGMU).
Over the years, he has held several key academic positions. He has served as Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Conservative Dentistry at PGIDS and has also been the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences at Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHSR), Rohtak.
Dr Tiwari’s areas of specialization include Regenerative Endodontics in tooth tissue engineering, Endodontic Microsurgery, and Aesthetic Dentistry. His contributions to research and clinical practice have earned him accolades, including the Dr C.S. Shaw & Manjula Shaw Award for Best Scientific Paper in Operative Dentistry at the 53rd Indian Dental Conference and the Best Paper Award at the 2nd Convention of the Indian Endodontic Society, New Delhi.
An accomplished researcher, Dr Tiwari has authored more than 80 research papers in national and international journals. He is also a Commonwealth Fellow at King’s College London and received a Fellowship in Micro Restorative and Endodontics from the Indian Board of Micro Restorative & Endodontics in November 2018. Recently, he was felicitated by members of the National Medicos Organization (NMO), Haryana.
Former student Rahul Garg, currently serving as a Deputy Director-rank officer at the National Health Mission, Panchkula, praised Dr Tiwari’s mentorship and leadership. Speaking to The New Indian Express, he described him as a distinguished academician and clinician who has guided numerous postgraduate students since completing his MDS from King George Medical University, Lucknow, in 1988.
