Kottayam: In a shocking incident at Vaikom Taluk Hospital, doctors were forced to stitch an 11-year-old boy’s head injury using the light of a mobile phone. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the child, identified as S Debateerth from Chembu, sustained severe head injuries after a fall.
The doctors decided to stitch the wound, but the hospital experienced a power outage, leaving them without proper lighting. As a result, they resorted to using mobile phone lights to perform the procedure.
The incident quickly went viral, leading to significant public outcry. The child’s parents expressed their anger over the lack of proper arrangements for power backup at the hospital. They questioned the administration about the absence of a generator, only to be told by the hospital attendant that the generator was often out of service due to irregular diesel supply.
The parents also raised concerns that the injury could not be cleaned adequately due to the poor lighting, making the entire treatment process difficult. They pointed out that even the dressing room lacked electricity.
The preliminary investigation by the RMO (Resident Medical Officer) revealed that the switch-over button connected to the generator malfunctioned, resulting in the power failure. The report also mentioned that a new electricity post had been installed. This report has been submitted to the District Medical Officer (DMO) for further action.
