Joint Platform of Doctors West Bengal raises concerns over alleged corruption in public health institutions, seeks immediate protection of official files and documents

Kolkata: A doctors’ organisation in West Bengal has urged Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala to take urgent measures to safeguard official records and prevent any alleged tampering of files in government offices following the ruling Trinamool Congress’ defeat in the state assembly polls.

In a letter issued on Tuesday, the Joint Platform of Doctors West Bengal said it had come to know through media reports that instructions were issued to search individuals entering and leaving state government offices.

Expressing concern over the condition of public healthcare institutions, the doctors’ body alleged that several institutions in the health sector had, over the years, “turned into centres of corruption and maladministration.”

“It is urgently necessary to preserve every item within these offices in an unaltered condition,” the platform stated in the letter, according to PTI.

The organisation further appealed to the chief secretary to ensure that no official allegedly involved in wrongdoing gets an opportunity to remove, alter, or tamper with crucial records and documents.

The letter also stressed the need for proactive administrative intervention in the interest of transparency and good governance in the state.

The communication was jointly signed by the platform’s conveners, Dr Punyabrata Gun and Dr Hiralal Konar.

The doctors’ platform has remained actively involved in protests linked to the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that triggered widespread outrage across the country.

Meanwhile, the political fallout from the RG Kar case continued to resonate in the assembly elections. Ratna Debnath, mother of the deceased doctor, emerged as a major political figure in the polls by leading in the Panihati constituency with a margin of over 56,000 votes, significantly denting the Trinamool Congress’ long-standing hold over the seat.
