MMC Introduces Digital Authentication to Curb Fraudulent Practices

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has launched a new initiative requiring its 1.4 lakh registered doctors to download and display a QR-code-based ‘Know Your Doctor’ card in their clinics.

As a quasi-judicial body, MMC regulates allopathic medical practitioners and has the authority to suspend or revoke licences in cases of misconduct. The new QR code system aims to enhance transparency and protect patients from unlicensed medical practitioners.

QR Code for Verification of Doctor Credentials

On Friday, MMC sent emails to all registered doctors, notifying them about the mandatory QR code display. Patients can scan the code to verify a doctor’s credentials, licences, specialisations, and expertise.

According to Dr Suhas Pingle, a former MMC representative, this simple yet effective system will help combat unauthorized medical practice across the state.

Tackling Fraudulent Medical Practices

In an official statement, MMC administrator Dr V Rughwani emphasized the urgent need for this initiative.

“The healthcare system in Maharashtra continues to face a significant challenge with unlicensed and fraudulent medical practices, which pose a serious threat, particularly in vulnerable and rural areas,” he stated.

By making QR code verification mandatory, the MMC aims to ensure better patient safety and prevent illegal medical activities in Maharashtra.
