Jagatsinghpur: A doctor and a pharmacist on duty at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Deriki, Odisha, were allegedly assaulted by five intoxicated men seeking medical treatment. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals, as both victims sustained injuries during the attack.

Incident Details

The five men, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, arrived at the PHC and became agitated when questioned about their medical concerns by the doctor. The situation quickly escalated as they began verbally abusing the doctor before physically assaulting him.

The pharmacist, who attempted to intervene and prevent further violence, was also attacked by the miscreants. After the assault, the perpetrators fled the scene, leaving the medical staff shaken.

Police Action

Following a formal complaint by the doctor at the Naugaon police station, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). However, no arrests have been made so far. Naugaon sub-inspector Nilamani Nayak confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

Healthcare Staff Demand Security

In the wake of the incident, healthcare workers at the Deriki PHC have expressed concerns over their safety. They have demanded stricter security measures and immediate action against the culprits to ensure such incidents are not repeated.

The assault underscores the growing need for enhanced protection for medical professionals, especially in rural healthcare settings, to prevent violence and maintain a safe working environment.
