Former Installer Arrested for Cybercrime and Extortion

Ahmedabad:
A doctor in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad was allegedly blackmailed after private footage from his clinic’s CCTV cameras was accessed remotely, exposing serious lapses in digital security. Police have arrested a 32-year-old former CCTV installer in connection with the case.

Retained Login Credentials Exploited
According to investigators, the accused had earlier installed the CCTV cameras at the doctor’s clinic while working with a private installation firm. Even after leaving the job, he allegedly retained the admin ID and password, which allowed him to remotely access the clinic’s surveillance system.

Private Footage Used for Extortion
Police said the accused accessed cameras inside the doctor’s cabin and obtained footage showing the complainant receiving a body massage. The video was later used to threaten the doctor and extort money, causing severe distress and fear of reputational damage.

Initial Demand and Payment
Speaking to The Times of India, a senior police officer said the accused initially demanded ₹40,000. Under pressure, the doctor paid ₹5,000 online. When further demands were made and threats continued, the doctor approached the police.

Threats via WhatsApp Messages
The doctor reportedly received WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers containing video clips from inside his clinic along with QR codes for online payment. The sender warned that the footage would be shared on social media and local community groups if the money was not paid.

Repeated Harassment From Multiple Accounts
Even after blocking the first number, the doctor continued to receive threatening messages from other accounts. Fearing further harassment and public embarrassment, he initially complied with the demand before seeking police intervention when the threats escalated.

Accused Admits to Crime
During interrogation, the accused admitted to hacking the CCTV system using old credentials. Police said he was later working as a labourer at a poultry farm and resorted to blackmail after his children fell seriously ill and he needed money for their treatment.

Police Flag Cybersecurity Lapses
Investigators noted similarities with earlier CCTV hacking cases, including one in Rajkot, where installers retained login credentials. Police once again flagged failure to change default passwords and admin IDs as a major vulnerability, urging institutions to strengthen digital security practices.
