Violence against healthcare workers has once again come under scrutiny after a shocking late-night incident at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital in Udaipur, where an on-duty doctor was allegedly targeted in an attempted attack by a patient’s attendant.
Patient on Ventilator Dies After Critical Battle
The incident followed the death of a 20-year-old woman from Ajmer who had been battling Guillain-Barré Syndrome. She had been on ventilator support since April 8, and her condition reportedly deteriorated on Monday evening.
Doctors had earlier managed to revive her using CPR, but despite continuous medical efforts, her health worsened after midnight. She was declared dead at around 12:30 AM.
Husband Allegedly Attempts Attack Inside Hospital
Soon after being informed of the death, the patient’s husband allegedly lost control and attempted to attack the on-duty doctor. Reports suggest he picked up an iron rod from the hospital premises and chased the doctor down a corridor, triggering panic among hospital staff and patients.
Hospital Authorities Respond, CCTV Footage Surfaces
Following the incident, the principal of Rabindranath Tagore Medical College, Dr Rahul Jain, reportedly reached the hospital during the night to assess the situation.
The alleged attack was captured on CCTV, and the footage was later shared on social media by Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, Vice President of the All India Medical Students’ Association. The video shows the accused picking up an iron rod and chasing the doctor, intensifying concerns over hospital safety.
Medical Fraternity Condemns Violence, Demands Action
Dr Momin strongly condemned the incident, stating that violence against doctors and healthcare workers is unacceptable under any circumstances. He called for strict legal action against those responsible and emphasized the urgent need for better security measures in hospitals.
Rising Concern Over Safety of Healthcare Workers
This incident adds to a growing list of attacks on medical professionals across India, raising serious questions about workplace safety in hospitals. Medical associations have repeatedly demanded stronger laws and enforcement to protect doctors, especially during high-stress situations like patient deaths.
The incident has reignited the debate on ensuring a safe working environment for healthcare workers, with calls for immediate reforms and stricter penalties against offenders.
