Mohali: A doctor in Zirakpur’s Godown area was brutally assaulted with swords, sticks, and stones by a group of drug addicts after he objected to their alleged drug consumption and peddling outside his clinic. The doctor sustained serious injuries and was also threatened with death during the attack.
Clinic Vandalised in Broad Daylight
The incident took place on Tuesday morning around 10 am. The assailants not only attacked the doctor but also vandalised his family clinic—smashing glass panes, scattering medicines, and ransacking the premises.
Assault After Confrontation
According to the doctor, the group had been consuming and selling drugs near his clinic repeatedly. On confronting them, they initially dispersed but returned shortly with reinforcements and launched the attack. To save himself, the doctor locked himself inside the clinic’s bathroom while the attackers stormed in.
Rescued by Locals, Rushed to Hospital
After vandalising the clinic and issuing death threats, the attackers fled. Nearby factory workers rescued the injured doctor and rushed him to Dhakoli Hospital for treatment, reports TOI.
FIR Registered, Police Investigation On
Following the incident, a complaint was lodged at the Zirakpur police station. Police registered a case under IPC Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (obscene acts), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), and 149 (unlawful assembly). Officials confirmed that CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to identify the culprits.
Pattern of Rising Attacks on Doctors
This case comes amid growing concerns over violence against medical professionals. Recently, at Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi, doctors announced an indefinite strike after an assault incident. Similarly, a paediatrics resident at SHKM GMC, Nalhar, was allegedly attacked by attendants earlier this year.
