Mob Attacks Doctor Following Serious Accusations by 22-Year-Old Nurse
Margherita, Assam: A gynaecologist, Dr. Selix Alam, was allegedly assaulted by members of an organization in Margherita, Assam, following accusations of sexual assault, blackmail, religious conversion attempts, and beef consumption, police said.
The incident, which took place on February 22, came to light after a 22-year-old nurse from the Gorkha community accused Dr. Alam of exploiting her under the false promise of securing a government job.
Survivor’s Allegations: Drugging, Blackmail, and Abuse
The nurse alleged that Dr. Alam took her to a secluded location, drugged her, and sexually assaulted her while recording the act. She claimed he later used the video to blackmail her, subjecting her to repeated abuse at work.
She further accused Dr. Alam of attempting to force her into religious conversion, compelling her to read Namaz and consume beef. When she resisted, she claimed he physically assaulted her and burned her with cigarettes. The abuse allegedly continued for nearly three months before she sought help from the Gorkha Students’ Union.
Mob Violence and Police Intervention
On February 22, members of the Gorkha Students’ Union and local residents confronted Dr. Alam at Margherita Civil Hospital. He was dragged out, tied to a pole, and beaten before police intervened and took him into custody.
Dr. Alam sustained severe injuries and remains in judicial custody as investigations continue.
Protests Against Mob Violence and Demands for Justice
The violent attack has sparked widespread condemnation from socio-cultural and women’s organizations, including the All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Margherita unit.
On March 12, they submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Commissioner, demanding legal action against those responsible for the mob assault. Protesters stressed that while allegations against Dr. Alam should be addressed legally, vigilante justice cannot be justified.
With rising tensions in the region, authorities face growing pressure to ensure a fair trial for the accused while also taking action against those involved in the attack.
