Etawah: In a shocking incident, four police personnel allegedly abused and forcibly took away an on-duty doctor from the Emergency Ward of the District Hospital in Etawah. The officers reportedly wanted him to attend to the ailing mother of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), despite the doctor being occupied with critical patients.

Doctor’s Refusal Ignored

According to the doctor, he requested the policemen to take another staff member instead, citing the heavy flow of patients in the emergency ward. However, the officers allegedly refused, snatched his mobile phone, and dragged him out of the hospital along with a pharmacist. CCTV footage from the hospital reportedly captured the incident.

SSP Denies Issuing Instructions

SSP Brijesh Kumar Srivastava clarified that he had not ordered anyone to forcibly bring a government doctor, but had only directed that a private doctor be arranged. He later denied any knowledge of misbehaviour, stating that private doctors had already reached his residence before government staff arrived.

Doctors’ Protest and Union Support

The incident triggered strong outrage among the medical fraternity. Healthcare staff staged a two-hour protest, suspending OPD services and locking the doctor’s chamber and pharmacy room. Representatives from the State Employees Union, PMS Association, and Diploma Pharmacist Association also joined, demanding immediate action against the police officers involved.

CMO Calls Action Unlawful, Assures Probe

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Brijendra Kumar Singh termed the removal of a government doctor from emergency duty unlawful. He stressed that the police should have informed hospital authorities instead of intervening directly. Following his assurance of a proper investigation, medical staff resumed OPD services. Meanwhile, the doctor has filed a complaint against the police officials for harassment and misconduct.
