Hyderabad: A doctor in Shaikpet is under investigation for alleged medical negligence after a 31-year-old dentist slipped into a coma following the administration of wrong injections at his clinic. The incident has triggered serious concerns about emergency handling and adherence to allergy-related precautions.
Patient Warned Doctor About Penicillin Allergy
According to the family, the dentist visited the clinic on November 22 with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and a sore throat. Her brother informed the attending doctor about her known allergy to penicillin-group antibiotics and stressed that she should not be given any drug from that category.
Monocef Injection Triggered Severe Reaction
Despite the warning, the doctor allegedly administered an injection of Monocef. Within moments, the dentist developed redness, itching, and bluish lips—classic signs of a severe allergic reaction. The doctor then administered two additional injections, Avil and Hydrocort, but the patient collapsed within seconds.
Cardiac Arrest and Anaphylactic Shock
According to the complaint filed with the police, the woman went into a severe anaphylactic reaction followed by cardiac arrest around 4:15 pm. The family claims the clinic failed to initiate appropriate emergency protocols to stabilise her before transport.
Transported in Autorickshaw Instead of Ambulance
The complainant further alleged that, instead of calling an ambulance, the clinic staff placed the critically ill woman in an autorickshaw and sent her to a hospital in Gachibowli. By the time she arrived, she was unresponsive, had no pulse, and was later diagnosed with hypoxic brain injury caused by prolonged oxygen deprivation. She is currently on a ventilator in the ICU.
Police Register Case Against Attending Doctor
Film Nagar police registered a case under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) on November 29. Investigators are examining the chain of events leading to the dentist’s collapse and the clinic’s handling of the emergency.
Police Seek Medical Records for Investigation
Sub-inspector M Prem Raj of Film Nagar Police Station told TOI that statements from the complainant and his mother have been recorded. The police have requested all medical records from the treating hospital, including the case sheet, to verify details of the treatment and the patient’s response.
Statement of Accused Doctor to Be Recorded
Authorities confirmed that the victim remains unconscious and on ventilator support. Police will soon record the statement of the accused doctor to ascertain whether proper medical procedures were followed and whether negligence contributed to the patient’s critical condition.
