Integrated Healthcare Hub Planned Across MAMC, LNJP, GB Pant, Guru Nanak Eye Centre and MAIDS
The Delhi Government is planning a major redevelopment of the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) campus, which houses some of the capital’s most prominent healthcare institutions, including Lok Nayak Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Centre, and the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS).
Officials have announced that a consultancy firm will be appointed to prepare a comprehensive roadmap and master plan for the large-scale transformation of the 137-acre medical campus. The project aims to create a modern, integrated healthcare ecosystem equipped with advanced infrastructure and improved patient services.
Rooftop Helipad Proposed for Emergency Medical Operations
One of the most significant features of the proposed redevelopment is the construction of a rooftop helipad. The facility is expected to facilitate the rapid transportation of donor organs, critically ill patients, emergency medical teams, and other life-saving services.
Authorities believe the helipad will significantly reduce response times during medical emergencies and could also be utilized for the movement of VIPs when required.
Modern Infrastructure and Digital Connectivity Planned
According to officials, the redevelopment blueprint includes dedicated power infrastructure, high-capacity digital networking systems, an advanced biomedical waste management facility, and enhanced campus-wide security measures.
The project is designed to strengthen healthcare delivery while supporting future technological advancements in medical education, research, and patient care.
Seamless Connectivity Across Medical Institutions
The proposed healthcare complex will feature dedicated emergency transit corridors, underground connectivity routes, and skywalks linking various institutions within the campus.
In addition, authorities are planning improved road infrastructure and modern traffic management systems to ensure smoother movement of patients, healthcare professionals, and emergency services.
Housing, Parking and Student Facilities to Get Major Boost
The redevelopment proposal also includes large centralized parking facilities and multi-storied residential complexes for doctors, nurses, students, and hospital staff.
Separate hostel facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students are also part of the plan, aimed at improving accommodation and campus living standards.
Convention Centre, Research Hub and Patient Support Facilities Included
Beyond healthcare infrastructure, the project envisions the development of a convention centre, a central library, a multidisciplinary research facility, and a central reception block.
Affordable accommodation for patient attendants, sports and recreational facilities, cafeterias, and a dedicated facility management centre are also proposed as part of the comprehensive redevelopment initiative.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Announces Approval for Study
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently announced that approval has been granted for a comprehensive and holistic study of the MAMC campus redevelopment project.
She stated that the first phase will focus on preparing a detailed master plan for the entire campus while ensuring compliance with regulations of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), local governing bodies, and all applicable statutory provisions.
Vision to Create a World-Class Medical and Academic Campus
The proposed redevelopment reflects the Delhi Government’s vision of transforming the MAMC campus into a world-class medical, academic, and research hub. Once implemented, the project is expected to enhance emergency response capabilities, improve healthcare accessibility, strengthen medical education, and provide better facilities for patients, students, and healthcare professionals alike.
