Mumbai: While Covid-19 hospitalisations are rising in Hong Kong and Singapore, doctors in Mumbai are also reporting a steady uptick in cases, though infections remain mild and not indicative of a severe outbreak, unlike the pandemic waves of 2020–2022.

Current Covid Situation in India: Low but Persistent

According to the Union Health Ministry’s dashboard, India currently has only 93 active Covid-19 cases. However, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked doctors to remain alert to fever cases, especially as Mumbai sees a consistent trickle of 7–9 cases per month.

BMC Executive Health Officer Dr. Daksha Shah emphasized, “There is no cause for concern… the Covid-causing virus is now endemic.”

Doctors Flag Fresh Infections, Mostly Mild and Flu-Like

Dr. Hemant Thacker of Breach Candy Hospital confirmed two new Covid-positive cases on Saturday, one of whom had recently returned from London with a severe throat infection, while the other had no travel history.

Physician Dr. Pratit Samdani also reported seeing over half a dozen cases in recent days. “Most of them seemed like common flu, but test results confirmed Covid,” he said, noting that the cases were primarily among young adults, not high-risk elderly patients.

Regional Trends: Singapore Sees 28% Spike

According to international reports, Singapore’s Ministry of Health noted a 28% surge in Covid cases, reaching 14,200 in the first week of May, with hospitalisations up 30%. Hong Kong is experiencing a similar trend.

Flu Vaccine Recommended, Not Covid Revaccination—Yet

Dr. Thacker and Dr. Samdani both reassured the public that India’s high immunity levels from past infections and vaccinations are likely to buffer the impact of any potential wave.

Doctors currently do not recommend a new Covid vaccine dose, but advise getting the seasonal flu shot, which may also provide some protection against other respiratory viruses.

Universal precautions like masking and staying home when febrile should be followed,” Dr. Samdani advised.
