New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel on Sunday stressed that communication is as important as clinical expertise in today’s complex healthcare system, underscoring its role in building trust between doctors, patients, and caregivers.

Book Launch on Healthcare Communication

Patel was speaking at the launch of Communication in Healthcare: Principles, Skills and Practices, authored by Dr. S.N. Basu, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at Max Super Speciality Hospital and a governing body member of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The book, published by Prabhat Prakashan, explores the principles and practices of effective communication in medical settings.

“Words Can Heal as Much as Medicines”

“In today’s world, where medicine is becoming increasingly complex, communication offers simplicity, empathy, and reassurance,” Patel said. She added that the book would serve as a valuable resource for doctors, nurses, medical students, and administrators by promoting a more humane, patient-centric approach to healthcare.

Policymakers and Experts Join

The launch ceremony at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre was attended by Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, and Dr. Abhijat Sheth, Chairperson of NMC and president of NBEMS. Both emphasised the growing importance of communication in medical education and practice.

Dr. Basu’s Contribution

Dr. Basu, who has been instrumental in establishing healthcare communication as a recognised discipline in India, highlighted that effective dialogue between healthcare providers, patients, and families can significantly improve patient outcomes and trust. Her book addresses topics such as breaking bad news, crisis communication, team dynamics, empathy, listening, and cultural sensitivity.

Dr. Basu has been honoured with multiple awards, including the Nari Shakti Award 2025, Global Visionary Award 2025, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award, and FOGSI Achiever Award. Internationally, she has received the Hamilton Bailey Prize and Gold Medal (UK) and was named International Woman of the Year by Cambridge, UK.
