Victim’s Land Allegedly Transferred to Accused’s Wife Using Forged Documents; CCB Probes Wider Conspiracy

Chennai: In a shocking case of deception, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Chennai Police has arrested a Tangedco employee for allegedly defrauding a retired government doctor of assets worth ₹10 crore, under the guise of helping her build a charitable hospital.

The accused, G. Shankar, an inspector of assessment at Tangedco’s Tiruvanmiyur office, is alleged to have gained the trust of Dr. Gowri, a retired government doctor and current consultant, over a period of time after renting her Adyar property.

According to the police, Shankar exploited Dr. Gowri’s long-standing dream of building a free hospital for the underprivileged on her land along East Coast Road (ECR). Claiming to have connections with IAS officers, he assured her of smooth approvals and support for the project.

Fraudulent Documents, Land Transfer Discovered

Shankar, along with his wife Bhuvaneswari and other relatives, allegedly provided forged documents to mislead Gowri and extract money, jewellery (including 26 sovereigns), and eventually, her land—registered fraudulently in Bhuvaneswari’s name.

The scam came to light when Dr. Gowri grew suspicious and began verifying the documents. Upon discovering the fraud, she filed a complaint, prompting the CCB to launch a full-fledged investigation.

Organised Fraud Involving Family Members

Police investigations have so far revealed that the scam was a coordinated effort involving at least 10 of Shankar’s relatives, all of whom are now under the scanner. A case has been registered against Shankar, his wife, and the others involved.

Shankar was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest the other accused in the case.
