In a major step toward strengthening traditional healthcare services, the District Hospital Bageshwar has introduced Kshar Sutra therapy in its AYUSH wing. The initiative is set to benefit patients suffering from anorectal disorders such as piles, fistula, and fissures, eliminating the need to travel long distances for treatment.
What is Kshar Sutra Therapy?
Kshar Sutra therapy is a well-established Ayurvedic para-surgical procedure used for managing conditions like fistula, piles, anal fissures, and infections near the tailbone. The technique involves inserting a specially medicated thread coated with herbal substances into the affected area.
This thread gradually cuts unhealthy tissue, drains infection, and promotes natural healing simultaneously, making it highly effective for chronic and complex cases.
Minimally Invasive and Cost-Effective Treatment Option
One of the biggest advantages of Kshar Sutra therapy is that it is minimally invasive and does not require major surgery. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to resume normal activities quickly.
Regular replacement of the medicated thread ensures continuous healing, while the therapy is known for its low recurrence rate, minimal complications, and preservation of healthy tissues—making it a preferred alternative to conventional surgery.
Facility Now Operational at Trauma Centre
The therapy is now being offered at the AYUSH operation theatre established within the trauma centre of the district hospital. Authorities have appointed both male and female surgeons to ensure accessible and inclusive care.
According to officials, the service is already functional, and at least one successful procedure has been performed since the facility became operational.
Growing Demand for AYUSH Treatments
The move reflects increasing public interest in Ayurveda and natural healing methods. Bageshwar district currently has a network of 35 AYUSH healthcare centres, including the AYUSH wing at the district hospital, 11 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and 23 government Ayurvedic hospitals.
Improved Accessibility for Patients
Previously, Kshar Sutra therapy was only available at a wellness centre in Majiyakhait, making access difficult for many patients. With its availability at the district hospital, patients can now receive timely and convenient treatment locally.
District Ayurvedic Officer Dr Nisha Kohli confirmed that specialists Dr Hema Goswami and Dr Sudhir Agri have been deployed to carry out the procedures.
Strengthening Traditional Healthcare Infrastructure
This initiative marks a significant step in integrating AYUSH services into mainstream healthcare, improving patient access to effective, affordable, and holistic treatment options in Uttarakhand.
