The Government of India’s flagship health scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, continues to expand its reach, with over 43.52 crore Ayushman cards issued and more than 36,000 hospitals empanelled nationwide, Union Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed the Rajya Sabha.


Rs 5 Lakh Health Cover for 12 Crore Families

Under the Ayushman Bharat–PMJAY scheme, eligible families receive health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

The scheme currently benefits around 12 crore families, representing the bottom 40% of India’s population, making it one of the world’s largest publicly funded healthcare programs.


Scheme Expanded to Frontline Workers and Senior Citizens

In a major expansion move in March 2024, nearly 37 lakh families of ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and Anganwadi helpers were brought under the scheme.

Additionally, the government extended coverage to approximately 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 years and above, spanning 4.5 crore families, irrespective of their socio-economic status.


43.52 Crore Ayushman Cards Issued

As of February 28, 2026:

  • 43.52 crore Ayushman cards have been created
  • 1.14 crore Ayushman Vay Vandana cards issued for senior citizens (70+)
  • 36,229 hospitals empanelled across India
    • 19,483 public hospitals
    • 16,746 private hospitals

This extensive network ensures access to cashless healthcare services across both public and private sectors.


11.69 Crore Hospital Admissions Worth Rs 1.73 Lakh Crore

The scheme has facilitated over 11.69 crore hospital admissions so far, with authorized treatments amounting to Rs 1.73 lakh crore.

The latest Health Benefit Package covers 1,961 procedures across 27 medical specialities, providing comprehensive treatment options to beneficiaries.


Digital Push Through Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

Launched in September 2021, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to create a unified digital health ecosystem in India.

As of March 11, 2026:

  • Over 86.64 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) created
  • More than 90.70 crore health records linked digitally
  • 2.56 lakh healthcare facilities using ABDM-enabled software

Government Highlights Progress in Parliament

The data was shared by Minister Prataprao Jadhav in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the government’s continued efforts to strengthen healthcare access and digital infrastructure across the country.

The rapid expansion of PMJAY and ABDM reflects a significant push towards affordable, accessible, and technology-driven healthcare for millions of Indians.
