Ayodhya Medical College Principal Removed Over Corruption Charges
Lucknow; In a strong reinforcement of the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who oversees health and medical education, has removed Dr. Gyanendra Kumar, principal of Rajarshi Dashrath Autonomous State Medical College, Ayodhya. Kumar has been reassigned to the Directorate of Medical Education and Training.
Allegations Linked to Employee Suicide
The decision comes after allegations of corruption and a connection to the suicide of Prabhunath Mishra, a contractual employee at the college. In his suicide note, Mishra accused Kumar of being responsible for his extreme step. Mishra’s family also lodged corruption charges against the principal.
Corruption Complaints and Investigation
The health department received multiple complaints alleging Kumar demanded cuts and commissions to clear pending bills for:
- Medicine supplies from pre-approved vendors.
- Housekeeping and biomedical waste services.
- Patient meals.
In response, a three-member committee was formed in May 2024 to investigate. The committee included:
- The Additional Director of Medical Education and Training.
- The Finance Controller of the Directorate.
- The Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue), Ayodhya.
The Lokayukta Uttar Pradesh also reviewed the case and was informed in December 2024 that the committee found Kumar prima facie guilty. A detailed investigation is ongoing.
Deputy CM’s Statement
“The deceased contractual employee’s family has made serious allegations against the principal. The government remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in public services,” said a spokesperson quoting DyCM Pathak.
The incident underscores the government’s firm stance against corruption and its commitment to improving the healthcare sector.
