Dedicated liver-focused ICU aims to improve survival outcomes and reduce need for transplants in pediatric emergencies
Landmark Step in Pediatric Healthcare in Bengaluru
In a major advancement for pediatric critical care, Aster CMI Hospital has launched Karnataka’s first dedicated Pediatric Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU), named PEARL (Pediatric Emergency and Advanced Response for Liver Care).
The state-of-the-art unit was inaugurated by M Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, in the presence of senior hospital leadership and medical experts.
A First-of-Its-Kind Liver-Focused ICU for Children
The PEARL unit marks a paradigm shift from general ICU care to a highly specialized, liver-centric model designed exclusively for children suffering from severe liver conditions.
Pediatric liver emergencies can escalate rapidly, often leading to life-threatening complications such as:
- Brain swelling
- Severe infections
- Organ failure
- Metabolic imbalances
PEARL is specifically structured to address these complexities with precision and speed.
Advanced Technology and Expert Multidisciplinary Team
The newly launched ICU is equipped with advanced monitoring systems and supported by a multidisciplinary team, including:
- Pediatric hepatologists
- Liver transplant surgeons
- Intensivists and anesthetists
- Infectious disease specialists
- Specially trained liver ICU nurses
This integrated approach ensures continuous monitoring, early intervention, and highly specialized care during critical situations.
Experts Highlight Life-Saving Impact of Early Intervention
Prof. N. Karthik Nagesh, Program Director – Pediatric Centres of Excellence, emphasized that timely intervention is crucial in such cases.
According to him, PEARL enables early, targeted treatment and continuous liver-focused care, significantly improving recovery chances and, in some cases, eliminating the need for liver transplantation.
Strong Liver Care Ecosystem Backing the Initiative
Dr. Sonal Asthana, Program Director for Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation, highlighted that the hospital’s liver care team treats over 7,000 patients annually and performs more than 100 liver transplants each year in Bengaluru.
He added that many children from economically weaker backgrounds are provided life-saving transplants under affordable programs, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to accessible healthcare.
Commitment to Redefining Pediatric Critical Care
Dr. Prashanth N, CEO of Aster Hospitals Karnataka, stated that the launch of PEARL reflects a strong commitment to delivering timely, specialized, and comprehensive care for critically ill children.
Family-Centered Care and Better Outcomes
Unlike conventional ICUs, PEARL is entirely tailored to pediatric liver care, ensuring:
- Faster diagnosis and intervention
- Improved recovery outcomes
- Reduced dependency on transplants in certain cases
The unit also emphasizes family-centered care by providing emotional support, transparent communication, and guidance during critical treatment phases.
A New Benchmark in Pediatric Healthcare
With the introduction of PEARL, Aster CMI Hospital is setting a new benchmark in pediatric healthcare by combining cutting-edge technology, expert medical teams, and compassionate care.
This initiative is expected to significantly improve survival rates and treatment outcomes for children suffering from severe liver diseases across Karnataka and beyond.
