Gohpur: A doctor at a government hospital in Assam’s Biswanath district has been accused of demanding a ₹25,000 bribe to release the post-mortem report of a man’s son and grandson.
The incident follows a tragic event in Gohpur on November 7, where Chidananda Saikia faced a devastating loss after his son fatally shot his seven-year-old child.
According to reports, Saikia alleged that the doctors at the local government hospital added to his grief by demanding a bribe to complete the post-mortem paperwork. He claimed he had no choice but to pay ₹25,000, reportedly for ambulance and sweeper services.
Saikia expressed his anguish, stating that the hospital’s demands worsened the already immense emotional toll on him. Seeking justice, he directly appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for intervention.
Following these allegations, Biswanath District Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah ordered an immediate investigation, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Kulendra Nath Deka.
This incident comes on the heels of another case reported earlier, where a Head Assistant in the Office of the Joint Director of Health in Sivasagar district was arrested after being caught accepting a ₹25,000 bribe at his residence.
