Itanagar: In a major development for healthcare and medical education in Arunachal Pradesh, the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, has decided to propose the establishment of a new medical college and hospital in Namsai. This initiative is part of the Aspirational District Programme and aims to address the region’s healthcare and medical education gaps.

The proposed medical college will offer 100 MBBS seats and a 420-bed hospital. The project, estimated to cost ₹375 crore, will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, enhancing both accessibility to quality healthcare services and medical education.

The state government’s decision aligns with prior commitments by the Central Government. Union Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar had earlier indicated the Centre’s willingness to consider the proposal, provided the state ensured the necessary facilities.

Currently, Arunachal Pradesh has only one medical college, the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), located in Naharlagun in the Papum Pare district. Established in 2017, TRIHMS began its academic journey in 2018 with an initial intake of 50 MBBS students and a 500-bed hospital equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

This new medical college in Namsai is expected to significantly boost healthcare infrastructure and contribute to addressing the demand for skilled medical professionals in the state.
