Doctors be alert

Morbi : The media publicity of doctors being negligent and the consumer court offering hefty compensation has led to a criminal plan hatched by a youth in Morbi, Gujarat. The plan included approach doctor for treatment, take treatment from the doctor and then allege side effects of the medicine and treatment and extort money from the doctor. Morbi cops stumbled upon this sinister modus operandi hatched by Ravirajsinh Jadeja, a 25 year-old serial offender who went to the extent of hiring a gang of goons to rob an Ayurvedic doctor. The sinister plan was foiled by the alertness of the police which arrested Jadeja and his accomplices.

Jadeja approached the Ayurvedic doctor Dr. Bharatsinh Rajput on the pretext of getting treatment for some disease. After being treated for few months Jadeja approached Dr. Rajput and picked up a fight alleging that the medicines prescribed by the doctor has serious side-effects. To settle the matter Jadeja demanded money from the doctor. The doctor refused to pay the money as demanded by Jadeja which led to a fight between Jadeja and Dr. Rajput. Dr. Rajput called the police and as the police told Jadeja that they will arrest him Jadeja apologized to Dr. Rajput.

However unable to extort money and nursing a grudge against Dr. Rajput, Jadeja issued a warning to Dr. Rajput. Jadeja then contacted other gang members so that he could rob Dr. Rajput  but he along with seven gang members was held with weapons during routine checkup on the Wankaner – Rajkot road.

Legal PrescriptionWhen a patient demands money for settling issues related to treatment the first act of the doctor should be to secure the complete medical records of the patientThe doctor should access whether they have followed proper line of treatment as per the standard medical practice and medical literatureIn case the doctor is not sure about the line of treatment they should consult an medical authority on the subjectThe doctor should approach the nearest police station if he/she is confident that there is no negligence on their partIn case, it is otherwise, the doctor should take the advice of a medico legal expert on the issue for an amicable solution
