Gujarat CBI Court Finds Doctor Guilty Under Corruption Act

New Delhi: A doctor employed with Air India has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1 lakh by a Special CBI court in Gujarat for demanding a bribe of ₹25,000 in exchange for providing a favorable medical report for a recruit.

Court’s Verdict and Investigation Details

The Special CBI Court in Ahmedabad convicted Dr. Suresh Marotrao Bhagatkar, who was engaged with the airline in Mumbai, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

During the trial, the court:
Examined 27 prosecution witnesses
Reviewed 49 documents/exhibits supporting the charges

The CBI had registered the case on January 3, 2011, alleging that Bhagatkar conducted a medical examination for a Security Agent post at Air India Air Transport Corporation Limited and demanded a ₹25,000 bribe to issue a favorable blood report.

  • When the complainant refused to pay, the doctor insisted and shared his bank details
  • ₹5,000 was deposited as per his instructions
  • The CBI filed a chargesheet on November 9, 2011, after an extensive investigation

In separate cases, the CBI has booked:
🔹 A hotel owner in Uttarakhand for defrauding Punjab National Bank of ₹11.78 crore
🔹 An iron casting company in Rajasthan for a ₹9.62 crore bank fraud

The Air India bribery case highlights the ongoing crackdown on corruption in government and public sector undertakings, with strict judicial action against those guilty of misconduct.
