New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, is set to enhance its capacity to provide care for critically ill patients by establishing a new Critical Care Block at the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre. Dr. M Srinivas, the Director of AIIMS, shared this development on Monday.
The new Critical Care Block will add 200 additional beds to the hospital’s capacity, which currently struggles with a high influx of patients requiring urgent care. Dr. Srinivas explained that the new block will be an extension of the existing Emergency ward, which currently has 200 beds. The new facility is expected to be operational within the next two years.
On average, AIIMS receives around 700 to 800 patients in its Emergency ward daily, but due to the high demand and limited bed availability, many patients are left on waiting lists. The addition of 200 beds is expected to alleviate some of the pressure on the Emergency ward.
In addition to the Critical Care Block, AIIMS is also planning to establish an Infectious Diseases Centre. Dr. Srinivas also discussed the ongoing development of the One AIIMS Referral Policy, aimed at ensuring smoother patient referrals across all AIIMS institutions in the country. Furthermore, the teleconsultation network, which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, is being strengthened to further enhance patient care.
