New Delhi: Following a violent assault on an intern from AIIMS New Delhi at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Chhainsa, Haryana, the institution is reportedly prepared to file an Institutional First Information Report (FIR) concerning the incident.

Dr. Indra Shekhar, President of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at AIIMS Delhi, confirmed the development on December 7. “The institute is willing to file an FIR regarding the matter. The victim is also exploring legal options and consulting AIIMS Delhi’s legal counsel before proceeding,” Dr. Shekhar told EdexLive.

Incident Details

The attack occurred on the night of December 5 and was captured on CCTV. The footage, now circulating on social media, shows the assailant walking down a corridor, confronting the intern, and physically assaulting him before being subdued by security personnel.

Condemnation and Calls for Action

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from medical associations, including the United Doctors’ Front Association (UDFA) and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA). These organizations have reiterated their long-standing demand for legislation to protect healthcare workers from violence.

In a press release issued on December 6, the RDA at AIIMS New Delhi urged AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas to take decisive action. They demanded the filing of an institutional FIR and the implementation of enhanced security measures at PHCs and peripheral health centers to safeguard resident doctors and interns on duty.

Next Steps

The victim is consulting with legal advisors to determine the course of action, while the institution’s leadership is expected to finalize steps to address the security concerns and ensure such incidents are not repeated.

The attack has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger measures to protect medical professionals working in vulnerable settings.
