Breakthrough device enables rapid brain imaging without shifting critically ill patients
In a major advancement in medical technology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences has introduced India’s first portable bedside MRI system, allowing critically ill ICU patients to undergo brain scans without being moved from their beds.
The ultra-low-field MRI device can be wheeled directly to patients, eliminating the need for dedicated MRI suites and reducing the risks associated with transporting unstable patients. This innovation is currently being used at the Centre for Neurological Conditions under the supervision of Dr. Shailesh Gaikwad.
Faster diagnosis to improve outcomes in critical cases
Doctors at AIIMS say the portable MRI system will significantly enhance rapid diagnosis and decision-making, especially in emergencies such as stroke, head trauma, post-operative neurosurgical care, and paediatric cases.
By enabling real-time imaging at the bedside, the technology is expected to transform ICU monitoring and expand access to advanced neurodiagnostics across healthcare settings. The initiative, supported by Radiosurgery Global, follows regulatory approval in India and could also boost research in point-of-care brain imaging nationwide.
Heatwave warning: Children at higher risk, say experts
Meanwhile, amid rising temperatures across the country, experts from AIIMS have issued a strong advisory on heatwave-related health risks, particularly for children.
Dr. Sheffali Gulati, Professor of Paediatrics, warned that children are more vulnerable to dehydration, heat stress, and neurological complications.
She advised that children should be kept well-hydrated with frequent intake of fluids that are low in sugar, and outdoor activities should be minimized during peak heat hours. Special caution is required for infants, who may not be able to express thirst, and for children with underlying conditions such as epilepsy, where seizure frequency may increase during extreme heat.
Preventive steps crucial during extreme heat exposure
Highlighting preventive measures, Dr. Naval Vikram, Professor in the Department of Medicine, emphasized the importance of protective habits for those exposed to high temperatures.
He recommended wearing loose, breathable clothing, keeping the head covered, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. These simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Strengthening healthcare innovation and public awareness
The introduction of bedside MRI technology marks a significant milestone in India’s healthcare innovation landscape, improving accessibility and safety in critical care. At the same time, AIIMS experts underscore the importance of public awareness and preventive care to tackle seasonal health risks like heatwaves effectively.
