New Delhi, April 28, 2026 — All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has assigned interim charge of the Director’s post to senior endocrinologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr Nikhil Tandon. The decision follows the relieving of Dr M. Srinivas after his appointment as a full-time Member of NITI Aayog.


Interim Arrangement Under AIIMS Rules

According to an office memorandum issued on April 27, 2026, the arrangement has been made under Rule 9(4) of the AIIMS Rules, 2019. Dr Tandon will discharge the functions of Director in addition to his current responsibilities for a period of six months or until a regular appointment is made, whichever is earlier.

The institute clarified that this is a temporary administrative arrangement, and Dr Tandon will not receive any additional remuneration or honorarium for taking on the extra charge.


Dual Roles at AIIMS Delhi

Currently serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism and Dean (Academic) at AIIMS Delhi, Dr Tandon will continue in these roles while overseeing the Director’s responsibilities.


Distinguished Career in Endocrinology

Dr Nikhil Tandon is a leading figure in endocrinology and metabolic research in India, with over 25 years of experience in the public healthcare system. His work spans cardio-metabolic diseases, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and metabolic bone diseases.

He was awarded the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2005 and honoured with the Padma Shri in 2015.


Research and Global Collaborations

Dr Tandon has collaborated with major organizations including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the British Heart Foundation.

He has played a key role in large-scale epidemiological studies, including the CARRS Cohort, focusing on cardiometabolic risk factors in urban populations. His research also explores childhood obesity genetics and diabetes prevention strategies, including a major multi-country study on women with a history of gestational diabetes.


Role in Policy and Advisory Bodies

At the global level, Dr Tandon has contributed to multiple World Health Organization expert groups, including those focused on diabetes classification and non-communicable diseases.

In India, he serves on several government advisory committees related to chronic disease care and digital health initiatives. He also chairs the Technical Advisory Group of the ICMR Young Diabetes Registry and is involved with national programmes targeting cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke.


Leadership Transition to Policy Sphere

Meanwhile, Dr M. Srinivas’ appointment to NITI Aayog marks a significant shift from hospital administration to national policymaking, where he is expected to contribute to healthcare strategy and reforms at the highest level.
