FIR Registered at Vejalpur Police Station Over Alleged Mental and Physical Harassment
A 29-year-old doctor working at an urban health centre in Ahmedabad has lodged a domestic violence complaint against her husband and his family, alleging sustained mental and physical harassment since her marriage in 2023. An FIR has been registered at the Vejalpur police station, and further investigation is underway.
In her statement recorded on Tuesday, the doctor named her husband, a Class-I officer in the Roads and Buildings Department in Gandhinagar, along with her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law as accused in the case. Her father-in-law is reportedly serving in the city police force.
According to a report by The Times of India, the FIR mentions that marital discord began within months of the wedding. The complainant alleged that she discovered inappropriate chats on her husband’s mobile phone, which led to frequent disputes between the couple.
The complaint further states that tensions escalated over the husband’s alleged deception regarding his travel plans. The doctor claimed she later found evidence suggesting he had travelled abroad. Upon visiting his office in Gandhinagar, she was reportedly informed that he was on a 15-day leave and had travelled to Pattaya, Thailand.
The doctor also alleged that she was repeatedly pressured to undergo in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedures despite medical reports indicating that her husband was unable to father a child. She stated that she underwent three IVF cycles, suffered considerable physical distress, and was still subjected to taunts for not conceiving.
According to the FIR, the situation turned violent on February 5 when she returned home from duty. She alleged that her husband and in-laws physically assaulted her, dragged her out of her room, and confiscated her mobile phone.
She managed to seek assistance from a neighbour and contacted her father. Following this, the 181 Abhayam women’s helpline and police officials intervened in the matter.
The Vejalpur police have registered a case under relevant sections pertaining to domestic violence and cruelty and have initiated further investigation into the allegations.
