Three-member committee formed to investigate allegations after viral video by patient’s daughter sparks outrage
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has ordered an inquiry into the death of a woman during treatment at SVP Hospital after her family alleged medical negligence. The incident came to light after the patient’s daughter shared a video on social media accusing doctors of failing to provide proper care.
The woman had been admitted to the hospital on February 21 with complaints of asthma and cough. According to AMC officials, her condition worsened during treatment and she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) three days before her death after developing multiple complications.
A preliminary report by the civic body stated that the patient died due to multiple organ failure. However, the incident gained widespread attention after the daughter posted a video online raising serious allegations against the hospital staff.
In the viral video, the daughter claimed that her mother, who was suffering from asthma and diabetes, did not receive adequate medical attention. She also alleged that patients admitted under government health schemes were being treated as experimental cases.
According to the family, the patient remained in the general ward for four days before doctors advised a bronchoscopy procedure to remove phlegm from her lungs. During the procedure, she reportedly suffered an asthma attack, after which her condition deteriorated rapidly and she was moved to the ICU.
The family further alleged that they were asked to sign fresh documents every day and received inconsistent information about the patient’s condition. They also claimed that the oxygen mask was pressed tightly on her face, causing bruising and bleeding, and that repeated attempts to insert injections led to multiple punctures before access was finally obtained through the neck.
Responding to the allegations, the deputy municipal commissioner of AMC constituted a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The hospital superintendent confirmed that a detailed probe has been ordered and assured that strict action would be taken if any negligence is established.
The incident also triggered protests from opposition leaders. Opposition leader Shehzad Khan Pathan staged a protest outside the hospital, alleging that the patient’s condition deteriorated due to negligence and demanding strict action against those responsible to prevent similar incidents in the future.
