A 37-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly running a fraudulent job recruitment scheme, targeting aspirants for positions at the Medical College and Hospital in Phulbani, Kandhamal district. The accused, from Chichuguda in Kalahandi district, posted fake advertisements around Phulbani, claiming job openings at the yet-to-be-operational medical facility.
Details of the Scam
The fake advertisements instructed job seekers to contact the accused via instant messaging. He had distributed printed leaflets, falsely advertising vacancies at the medical college. Police arrested him after a complaint was filed by Akshaya Kumar Sahu, the district medical officer, who confirmed that the advertisements were entirely fabricated.
Seizure and Previous Offenses
During his arrest, the police seized a mobile phone and the forged advertisement leaflets. The man, who runs a small shop in his village, has a history of similar offenses. He had been previously arrested in 2019 and 2021 for similar cheating cases in Kandhamal district. Despite being released on bail, he continued his fraudulent activities.
Investigation and Interrogation
In interrogation, the accused admitted to posting the fake job advertisements and claimed to have received 5-6 calls daily from job aspirants seeking employment. Police have registered a case against him, and investigations are ongoing.
Background on the Medical College
In December 2020, the Odisha state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, approved the establishment of a medical college in Phulbani with an investment of Rs 450 crore. The project will feature hostels, an auditorium, and housing facilities for doctors and staff. However, the college has not yet become operational, making the job offers entirely baseless.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing to investigate the accused’s activities and are working to prevent further fraudulent schemes. The public is urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious job advertisements or offers.
