Agartala: A recent attack on Dr. Dhrupad Das at Unakoti District Hospital in Kailasahar on Thursday night has ignited widespread resentment among the medical community in Tripura. The All Tripura Government Doctors Association (ATGDA) has warned of statewide protests if the perpetrators are not apprehended promptly.
Incident Details
According to Dr. Das, on the night of December 5, three individuals—Shyamal Das, Sandip Das, and Ranjit Das, reportedly BJP workers and local leaders—arrived at the hospital seeking treatment for Ranjit Das, who had a head injury. As Dr. Das was attending another patient, he directed them to an adjoining room for bandaging the injury. This instruction allegedly provoked Shyamal Das and his companions, who responded by slapping and verbally abusing the doctor.
The situation escalated despite police intervention, as the trio reportedly misbehaved with the officers as well. The entire altercation was captured on a mobile phone by police personnel on duty.
Complaint Filed but No Action Yet
The next morning, at around 11:00 AM, the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Rohan Paul, along with Dr. Das and other staff, lodged a formal complaint at Kailasahar Police Station against the accused. However, no action has been taken so far.
Local sources revealed that Shyamal Das previously served as a BJP Mandal President in Chandipur constituency, while his associates remain active party workers.
Medical Fraternity Condemns the Incident
ATGDA President Dr. Pradip Debbama visited Kailasahar and convened an emergency meeting with the hospital staff. The meeting strongly condemned the attack and resolved that if the police fail to act against the accused, the ATGDA will initiate a statewide agitation.
The medical fraternity has demanded strict action to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and to prevent such incidents in the future.
