New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has served show-cause notices to 115 government and 83 private medical colleges for failing to comply with directives to upload stipend details for interns and resident doctors.
The NMC, in a recent notice, highlighted that this non-compliance is being taken “seriously.” The 198 colleges, including prominent institutions such as Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and several ESIC-run and private institutions like DY Patil Medical College and MGM Vashi, have been asked to justify why punitive measures should not be imposed for their lapse.
Deadline to Submit Stipend Data
The NMC has instructed these colleges to immediately furnish stipend data for the financial year 2023-2024 via email at stipend23-24@nmc.org.in within three days of the notice dated November 28, 2024. The regulatory body emphasized that the details must include month-wise payments to MBBS interns, postgraduate residents, and senior residents.
Background and Legal Directives
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the NMC to submit comprehensive stipend data across all states following allegations that 70% of medical colleges were not paying interns. In compliance with the court’s order, the NMC had set deadlines in April 2024 for institutions to provide this data. Despite warnings, many colleges failed to comply.
Recurring Non-Compliance
Colleges were also instructed to update stipend details monthly on their respective websites for the academic year 2024-2025. However, the latest notice indicates persistent non-compliance by many institutions, prompting the NMC to issue warnings of strict action.
