Minimally Invasive Surgery Performed at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital
New Delhi: A 75-year-old woman diagnosed with ‘sick sinus syndrome‘—a condition caused by the deterioration of the heart’s natural pacemaker—has undergone a groundbreaking treatment at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi.
Dr. Vanita Arora, a clinical lead in cardiac electrophysiology, led the procedure using the AVEIR VR ABBOTT leadless pacemaker, offering a minimally invasive alternative to conventional pacemaker surgery. The patient, who also suffered from diabetes, hypertension, and recurrent urinary tract infections, faced a high risk of complications from traditional surgical methods.
The advanced pacemaker was implanted via a transvenous method, avoiding incisions and device pockets, thereby reducing infection risks significantly. Dr. Arora emphasized that this technology not only mitigates the risk of complications but also improves the quality of life for patients with complex health conditions.
The surgery, performed on November 11, allowed the patient to recover quickly and return to her routine. Shivakumar Pattabhiraman, Managing Director of the hospital, highlighted that this innovation is especially beneficial for patients with compromised immune systems or multiple health concerns.
